Kite Facts Red kites are beautiful birds of prey. They get around by gliding on the wind and look very graceful in the sky. They are not very strong and cannot kill big animals, so most of their food is carrion (dead animals) which they find lying around (so they behave a bit like vultures).
| | | They were once very common and could be seen all over the UK, in the countryside but also in cities. In Victorian times, they were persecuted (hunted down) and became extinct in both England and Scotland by the 1870s. A few were saved in Wales and became protected. Nowadays, all British birds of prey are protected by law.
| Since 1989, people from the Government and the RSPB have been returning red kites back into parts of the UK. They are now nesting and increasing in numbers. They are now spreading and it is hoped that they will become common and widespread across the UK, once more.
